Atmosphere

Thin layer of gas held at the surface of planets sufficiently massive to stop volatile atoms from escaping the effects of gravitation. The Moon is too small to keep an atmosphere. On Earth, the atmosphere is relatively thin when compared to the diameter of our planet, but it makes all the difference for the diversity of life which it shelters.
