Earth's crust

Our planet’s surface is composed of a layer of solid rock that is relatively thin compared to the Earth’s diameter. This skin of solid stone “floats” on the hot magma of the mantle that surrounds an even hotter core at the heart of the planet. Earth’s crust is divided into vast moving plates that slowly rub and slide over each other: this is what the tectonic plates and continental drift are all about.
