Geothermic heat

Even under a massive ice sheet, volcanic activity continues. Earth’s internal heat (geothermic heat) is independent from solar energy – its source being radioactive decay of certain types of atoms within Earth’s core and mantle. It is what keeps the magma hot and moving, driving the slow continental drift. There is volcanic activity under the Antarctic ice cap, possibly responsible for the presence of liquid lakes deep under the ice, such as the large Vostok Lake.
