ZONE ADRÉNALINE Goldthwait Sea
Ancient sea that existed above the estuary
and the gulf of the Saint Lawrence River. The drowning of the terrain by the
Goldthwait Sea was done at the rhythm of deglaciation and the subsequent
isostatic rising, which took about 7,000 years, from 14,500 to 7,000 BP. From
the beginning of the deglaciation period, the sea formed an important calving
bay where immense icebergs detached from the face of glacier. The sea separated
two ice masses on both sides of the Saint Lawrence. The south bank was the
first to de-ice (14,000 BP) and very quickly, after not even 400 years, the
northern coast of Gaspé was totally free of ice. The North Shore was drowned a
little later, from 12,500 BP, except in the case of Anticosti Island where the
coastal area was submerged from 14,000 BP.
