Laflamme Sea
The
ancient sea which submerged the region around Lac Saint-Jean. The flooding
occurred first in the Saguenay fjord from about 11,000 BP onwards, following
the gradual retreat of the glacial tongue that was present at that time. This
allowed the Goldthwait Sea to better penetrate into the de-iced fjord. The
invasion of seawater of the Laflamme Sea into the Lac Saint-Jean basin occurred
a little later, by 10,000 BP. The invading sea submerged the land to an area of
about 4,800 Km
2, for a total sea surface of 6,100 Km
2.
The Laflamme Sea formed a little later than the Champlain or the Goldthwait Seas,
which was also the case of the two, post-glacial Nordic seas.
