Thule people

Name given to ancient tribes associated with archaeological finds in excavations close to the air base at Thule, Greenland.

The ancestors of the Thule left Alaska around 1,000 CE to migrate all along the Arctic. It is the Thule who can be truly called the ancestors of today’s Inuit. The Thule possessed the necessary tools and weapons for landing large marine mammals and hunting techniques which they used in the generous waters of the Bering Sea. In a little more than a century, the Thule took possession of the greater part of the Arctic. They used the umiak, a boat more than 10 metres long and covered in animal skins. They also used sleds pulled by dogs, spears and javelins, spear throwers or atlalts, and even inflatable bladders used for hunting marine mammals.
