Tyrell Sea

The Tyrell Sea spread itself out on both sides of Hudson’s Bay and James Bay region, for about 8,000 Km2, with a maximum marine limit of as much as 270 metres altitude. This high altitude can be partly explained by the greater than normal thickness of the ice sheet in the region which sunk the earth crust even lower, allowing the sea to submerge so much of the continent. The total surface area of the Tyrell Sea was about 311,000 Km2 and the water invaded the Hudson’s Bay region for up to 83 Km inland, to the shores of the today’s Lake Guillaume-Delisle. The Tyrell Sea was the largest post-glacial sea in the territory that is now modern Quebec, covering at its peak an area a little greater than 166,000 Km2.
